Rob Wheeler of Lynchburg Photoworks led a photowalk in downtown Lynchburg this morning. We met at Riverfront Park and strolled down the Bluff Walk. After circling back to Riverfront Park, we ended up taking the Riverwalk Trail to the overlook on the bridge to Percival’s Island. Rob is scheduling monthly photowalks to explore the Lynchburg and surrounding areas.
What impressed me today was the amount of foot, and bike, traffic taking advantage of these downtown resources. When I was a young boy, we went downtown to the movies at the Paramount theater and families still shopped downtown. I can remember my Dad taking us to the original Texas Inn on Main Street. By the time I was a teenager, a significant amount of retail business moved out of downtown to the suburbs. The only times I can remember intentionally going downtown were to dine at the “new” Texas Inn, or T-Room, as we always called it.
Downtown is certainly changing. There were downtown residents walking their dogs; bikers, joggers, and strollers enjoying the parks and trails; and a handful of photographers wandering around. I guess it’s time for me to make a concerted effort to spend more time downtown.
On a side note, I can’t believe that I did not stop at the T-Room on the way up Rivermont!
